'The Friends of the 'W' class Trams'
At wclasstrams.com we want your support, this will ensure that if called on you
may assist us in our unique crusade against the further withdrawal of the unique
W class trams of Melbourne. In 2000 the final 53 'W' series trams left in service
were withdrawn due to safety braking issues, all owing to the faulty modifications
installed on the brakes two years beforehand (1998). The then government
assured that the promised 53 W class trams would all be returning in time. Many
W class trams have returned, however the time for the complete return of all the
W class fleet has lapsed, there is now a large deficit in the fleet of 53 trams of
about 20 W class trams altogether. In brief this means that there are only 29 W
class trams now in service. The government has left operations to the discretion
of Yarra Trams who are a multi-national company and have no investment in the
continued operation of the W class fleet, but see plenty of reasons to continue to
reduce their use. Yarra Trams maintains that the W class fleet only run on small
routes to keep the fleet safe while dismissing the former routes 12 and 16, both
ex 'W' routes being high profile routes for the W's. Instead, Yarra Trams have
stipulated under their narrow vision (not government policy) that only 27 W class
trams will run at any one time on low their low profile routes, routes 30 and 35,
and the Chapel Street route 78/79 at low speeds. The attitude of Yarra Trams
toward W class trams is unfounded, meanwhile Melbourne's iconic W class
trams are declining in number. Fleet numbers have meant that the trams are
skeletal in their profile at best. Yarra Trams is also running modern Z class (non
'W' class) trams to share the routes with W's when (they "say") a driver is not
trained to drive the W's, now it is three years on since the W's returned to
service, Yarra Trams paints a very clear picture of their vision of Melbourne's
Transport System, and you can be sure a W class tram can't be seen anywhere!

So help us to protect the W class trams by signing up to 'The friends of the 'W'
class trams', we are a group in strong opposition to a Melbourne without W class
trams! Do it today! All you have to do is send an email to: fairyjoy@bigpond.com
and be 'a friend' of the W class trams, together in numbers we can make a
difference! Our city is unique, it can stay that way, by retaining it's unique
attributes of which W class trams form a great portion, Melbourne has a
character that exists nowhere else in the world. W Class trams need protection
from the 'David and Goliath' battle that is; a Multi-National company interested in
keeping trams modern at all cost versus, 'The Friends of the W Class trams'
interested in retaining a
high profile, sizeable heritage adjunct to a modern tram
system.
